Incoming: CFCF – "You Hear Colours" video and mp3

cfcfI’ve previously written about  CFCF and his EP Parisian Nights which is available for digital download from Paperbag Records. But Acephale Records just released the fantastic new 7 inch “You Hear Colours” from Montreal DJ. The mysterious knob tweaker also has a nifty new video for the track. The clip, which was directed by Dallas filmmaker/blogger/VJ Tommyboy, teams CFCFs instrumental track with footage from the National Geographic and NASA video “Loneliness of The Long Distance Runner,” which I must say, work quite well together.

You can order your limited edition (of 500) copy of “You Hear Colours” backed by the as-excellent-as-the-a-side track “Invitation to Love” on white vinyl via Acephale’s website. An mp3 of “You Hear Colours” is below.

Incoming: Fan Death

Vancouver’s Fan Death the new side project from Dandi of Dandi Wind fame. The elctro-rapping duo lay down old school rhymes over some of the best Harold Faltermeyer hooks the German musician never layed down. Personally I prefer Fan Death to Dandi Wind, though I’ve never seen either live (I’ve been told that’s where Dandi shines). According to my friend in Vancouver, they’ve got quite the industry buzz on at the moment. Fan Death are playing a show down at Sneaky Dees here in Toronto Friday, February 6 with very cool local trio Parallels. Check it out…

Incoming: CFCF – "Crystal Mines"

Montreal’s remix wizard CFCF has his debut EP Parisian Nights out now on Paper Bag Records digital, but you can also buy his new seven inch “You Hear Colours/Invitation To Love” from my friend Patrick’s Acephale Records. This shit sounds like the alternate soundtrack to Beverly Hills Cop. While I don’t want to take away from the artistic achievement that is Parisian Nights, if you can only afford to get one, get the seven inch – vinyl’s way cooler than mp3s and Patrick will appreciate your business.

Incoming: Gallows – "Staring at the Rude Bois"

Alright, so this track isn’t exactly new. In fact it’s been out in the UK since 2006. But I stumbled across the band’s myspace page while looking up lead singer Frank Carter’s name after seeing it on the NME’s 2007 list of cool people (I generally need lists like this to sort out who to like) cause I guess US hardcore was really hip in England in 2007 (could someone check on that for me?). Their single “Staring at the Rude Bois” with it’s oddly effective appearance of Lethal Bizzle (not to be confused with a Snoop Dogg lyric) really got stuck in my head and well, here we are.

The band’s debut Orchestra of Wolves was distributed by Epitaph in the US and apparently their new record Grey Britain will be the first of a three record, million dollar deal with Warner. I guess this kind of thing doesn’t ruffle the feathers of the UK hardcore community the way it does in North America. The record drops in May.

Incoming: Darling DeMaes

I’d like to wholeheartedly encourage everyone to check out my friend Erik’s band the Darling DeMaes. They’re a stupid-catchy little pop combo out of Montreal who were just checked by the Montreal Mirror as a band to watch in ’09. Along with tracks on their myspace, you can become a fan of the DeMaes on Facebook, where they’ve got four of the songs from their debut LP A User’s Guide to Raising the Dead (Songs of Spring) up for our listening pleasure. Now if we can just convince them to play some shows here in Toronto…

Incoming – Put the Rifle Down and Dance Yourself to Death

l_0e9248ded27ea0c292b60d0f34345ac4

A pair of fantastic TO-based bands will finally release their long awaited debuts in the next couple of months. Dance Yourself to Death, an all female power pop group drop Ready For Love on January 27 while much buzzed dance-rock four-piece Put the Rifle Down will release Selector sometime in later this month or next on SLU records. Both bands are awesome, and if Put the Rifle Down’s demo EP is any indication, Selector should be one of the year’s better local releases.

Incoming: White Lung, Nu Sensae, Shearing Pinx – Three Great Vancouver Bands

_mg_2607

I was born in Vancouver and lived there until I was 25. After a two-year stint in Halifax, I moved to Toronto from where I’m currently writing this post. Why do I tell you this? To explain why it wasn’t until this Christmas that I was able to get my hands on some of the great, limited edition records currently being released by a handful of Vancouver bands. This whole “weird punk” or “art punk” scene got national exposure when Exclaim! magazine did a story on it a couple of months back. The grand daddy of them all is the Emergency Room Vol 1 compilation, since it’s the best single summation of what’s going on. But if you can I highly recomend getting your hands on records by White Lung, Nu Sensae and Shearing Pinx. I dig the no bullshit vibe to their music – it’s too cacophonous to break into that sort of Crystal Castles type of hipster douchebaggery. I still haven’t seen any of these guys live, but everything I’ve heard and read leads me to believe they’re all fantastic.

Incoming new music: The First Aid Kit

The First Aid Kit are a bunch of young college types that oranized themselves over in Halifax, Nova Scotia. They’re great, and as the new tracks they’ve posted on their myspace show, they keep getting better. You can download their 5-track debut EP for free here. They’re looking to put out another one in January. How about some shows out here in Toronto guys? You could bring the lovely ladies in the Rhythm Method along for the ride…
